PHA small grants to improve health and wellbeing: now open

Community, voluntary and statutory organisations within the South Eastern area are invited to apply for Public Health Agency (PHA) small grants to promote health and wellbeing and reduce health inequalities.

The small grants programme is open until 12 October 2012 offering grants of up to £5,000 for projects that will be completed by the 31 March 2013.

A variety of factors can affect our health and wellbeing, including the choices we make, along with housing, education, transport, employment and sense of community. The scheme is designed to encourage and support the development of local community based projects and initiatives that will help improve the health and wellbeing of local communities. Projects supported within the scheme must focus on one or more of the following themes:

  • Increasing access to benefits;
  • Reducing the impact of fuel poverty;
  • Preventing the uptake of smoking in children and young people;
  • Increasing physical activity levels and uptake;
  • Improving nutrition and promoting healthy eating;
  • Improving mental health and wellbeing and reducing the risk of suicide;
  • Improving sexual health;
  • Reducing drug and alcohol related harm.

Chris Totten, PHA Head of Health and Social Wellbeing Improvement (South Eastern Area), said: “The Public Health Agency is seeking through this year’s small grants scheme to  support the work of local groups and organisations within the District Council areas of Ards, Down, Lisburn and North Down. The scheme has been designed to fund work to improve health and wellbeing of people living within the South Eastern area, helping them to make healthier choices and delivering a range of programmes that tackle health inequalities.”

“We would encourage all organisations that can make a positive impact on any of the identified themes, particularly demonstrating innovation, community involvement, creativity such as through the use of community arts projects to further health and social wellbeing, to apply for a small grant before 12 October 2012.”
