It is never too late to get active in Belfast!

It is never too late to get active in Belfast!

Older people will be able to combine socialising with a wide choice of enjoyable activities that benefit their physical and mental wellbeing at a fantastic event taking place at the Grove Wellbeing Centre on 20 March.

‘Active Belfast - Active Ageing’, a partnership of agencies interested in promoting physical activity for people aged 50 and over, is running the free event.

Qualified tutors will be on hand to demonstrate and support people in a choice of activities: have a go in the community garden; try the outdoor gym; take part in a short walk around the park; experience an armchair aerobics session; try a complementary therapy; participate in games such as boccia, indoor bowls, table tennis and more.

In addition people can get their blood pressure and BMI checked, as well as other aspects of their health assessed. The event will end with a lunch and a short tea dance.

Séamus Mullen, the Public Health Agency’s Head of Health and Social Wellbeing Improvement in Belfast, said: “Leading an active lifestyle has significant health benefits if you are an older person which will help them maintain their independence for longer, for example by reducing their risk of having a fall or getting dementia. Through this event we hope to encourage older people to keep active by availing of the programmes and facilities in their local areas.”

Olaf Hvattum, chair of ‘Active Belfast - Active Ageing’, added:  “If you are an older person, this is a great opportunity to come together with other people and participate in some new activities that you may never have thought of trying before. Leisure centres and community gardens are a great way for older people to meet with friends and keep active and Belfast has a range of these venues across the city. People will also be given the opportunity to book short courses which can be delivered in their own areas.”

The event is open to all older people from across the city and will take place on Wednesday 20 March from 11am to 1.30pm at Grove Wellbeing Centre, 120 York Rd, Belfast.
