Director of Public Health’s core tables launched

The Director of Public Health’s Core Tables contain a range of demographic information on population numbers, births and birth rates, deaths and death rates, causes of death and life expectancy. It also includes information on infectious disease notifications, screening uptake rates and self-harm presentations to Emergency departments. The tables and more details are available here

Some key points to highlight from the 2014 Core Tables are:

  • Projected increased number of older people – the numbers over seventy-five will increase forty-four per cent (from 127,000 in 2014 to 183,000 by 2026 – Table 2a page 7)
  • The continued increases in life expectancy in Northern Ireland. In the last ten years this has increased by nearly two years for men and women.  (Table 11a page 34)
  • The substantial drop in premature death rates overall  since 2005 (males 21% and females 11%) and most notably from Heart Disease and Stroke. (Table 9a page 22)
  • When expressed in Potential Years of Life Lost (PYLL) for those aged 1–74 suicide and self-inflicted injury represents the second highest cause of years lost. (Table 10c page 32). This reflects the tendency for these to be younger people.
  • The marked increase in Scarlet fever notifications in 2014. (Table 12 page 36)
  • The continued high levels of immunisation in Northern Ireland. (Tables 13 a and b page 37)
  • The high levels of uptake for Cervical, Breast and Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm screening. (Tables 15 a-d page 42)
  • In 2013/14 more than six thousand individuals presented at Emergency departments with self-harm with 8,431 separate presentations. (Table 16 page 43)
