Consultant Nurse wins Professional Excellence accolade at Life After Stroke Awards event

Consultant Nurse at the Public Health Agency, Sandra Aitcheson, has been awarded the Professional Excellence Award, Northern Ireland Life After Stroke Awards which took place recently. Health Minister Edwin Poots, government and health representatives honoured the achievements of stroke survivors, their carers and supporters at the event.

Speaking at the event in the Stormont Hotel, Tom Richardson, Northern Ireland Director, The Stroke Association said that Sandra has been a key player in pioneering for better stroke services in Northern Ireland.

“Not only did she spearhead the first successful Charter Mark application by the Ulster Hospital stroke unit, but she was instrumental in the initial development of the Stroke Strategy for Northern Ireland. Sandra was also involved in the foundation of NIMAST and subsequently NIMAST nurses which has been a leading forum for professionals and nurses in implementing new evidence and improving their services. She has also worked closely with the Eastern Health and Social Services Board, the DHSSPSNI and the Public Health Agency.

“Sandra’s commitment to stroke in Northern Ireland is undiminished over the last twenty years. Her enthusiasm and dedication is infectious and she has worked tirelessly to improve the quality of care that stroke patients and their families are offered. She has been a beacon of light for stroke and we hope she continues to be for many years to come.”

A total of eight awards were handed out at the event.

Health Minister Edwin Poots said; “The Stroke Association’s Life After Stroke Awards showcase examples of the great work that goes on every day to help alleviate the challenges faced by stroke sufferers and their families. They acknowledge the bravery and commitment of people who have been affected by, or who have had a stroke. Recognising those who have had to overcome personal challenges following a stroke and those who have provided the support frameworks, which do so much to help stroke sufferers maximise their rehabilitation and recovery. ”
